IS RICE FATTENING? WHICH RICE IS BEST FOR WEIGHT LOSS?


Rice is a staple die for more than half of the world’s population. It is principally consumed in Asia. Asia produces more than 100 million metric tonnes of rice annually.

Now, this is a question in everyone’s mind that whether rice is fattening or not. Many of us believed that eating rice during our weight loss journey increases our weight. So they cut rice from their die plan, which results into not getting enough energy which is more dangerous than increasing weight. So let’s just have a look whether rice is fattening or which rice is best for weight loss.

At first we going to discuss how we get benefited by rice.



1. In many countries of the world, rice is eaten regularly. Rice is the main food of the Japanese. Rice plays a unique role in preventing heart disease, according to a Japanese researcher and his colleagues at Temple University in Philadelphia. This is probably the reason why the death rate from heart disease is lower in Japan.

2. The level of ‘GI’ i.e. glycemic index in rice is much higher. In other words, rice can increase the amount of glucose in the blood very fast. This does not mean that rice should be removed from the diet.  The solution is to eat low-GI foods with rice, such as pulses, eggs, meat, fish, etc. As a result, there will be a balance in the level of GI in the food.

3. Rice does not contain any gluten. That is why rice is the best non-allergic food. Many people are allergic to gluten, rice is the ideal food for them. Because through this they can also take in other nutrients. Rice contains a variety of vitamins B, D, calcium, fiber, iron and a variety of minerals that are essential for our body.

4. Oil made from bran contains powerful antioxidants that help the heart to resist various diseases. Rice also does not contain bad cholesterol so it helps to reduce cholesterol levels.

5. Rice provides the energy our body needs. Because rice contains a lot of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are essential for metabolism and are converted into functional and usable energy by the body. Rice is low in fat, salt and sugar.

6. Rice is the best food for those who have hypertension because of its low sodium content.

7. Ayurvedic doctors recommend using rice starch to alleviate the pain on the surface of the skin. Rice, especially brown rice, contains phenolic compounds, anti-inflammatory ingredients that help reduce redness and pain on the skin. Rice antioxidants can slow down skin wrinkles and age spots.

Now, according to the milling of rice there are various types of rice. Let’s see which type of rice is best for weight loss:-

WHITE RICE – White rice provides 130kcal per 100g (according to USDA’s food composition database) and also provides heavy amount of carbohydrates (14.84g per 100g). It has a rich source of calcium and folate but contains low amount protein, fiber, minerals. But still this is the most popular sets of rive all around the world.

But nutritionally, white rice might not seem to be the best choice if you’re on diet. But people who have irritable bowel or digestive disorders should opt for this variety because it’s low in fiber and easy to digest. If you do choose to eat this rice, go for the long grain ones like basmati.



 BROWN RICE – Its fiber is able to reduce fat. It keeps the stomach full for a long time as it has more fiber. As a result, the tendency to hunger gradually decreases.This rice is also very good for reducing heart problems. If you have cardiovascular problems, you must include brown rice in your diet. It is one of the best foods for heart patients as it has a lot of antioxidants.This type of food increases the level of good cholesterol by reducing the level of bad cholesterol in the body. Increasing the level of high concentration lipoprotein also helps maintain the balance of cholesterol in the blood.This type of rice needs to be eaten for hormonal diseases like diabetes, thyroid etc. Its fiber controls weight, lowers blood sugar levels and regulates the effectiveness of hormones.Brown rice keeps away constipation due to fiber. It contains a lot of magnesium which is beneficial for bone care. Increasing bone density is one of the functions of magnesium. So this food is very good for rheumatoid arthritis.

This food is also very effective in preventing diseases as it contains manganese, selenium and some other essential minerals.



RED RICE : Many studies have shown that red rice contains phytic acid, fiber and essential polyphenols. These help diabetics control their blood sugar. Its glycemic index is low, which means that a diabetic's sugar does not rise too much after eating it. On the other hand, white rice has a high glycemic index, which is why it raises blood sugar and is also responsible for the accumulation of fat in the body. Experts say to eat red rice for diabetics. Healthy people eat red rice to reduce the risk of diabetes in the future.This rice is full of anti-oxidants. Various studies have shown that getting rid of white rice and getting accustomed to red rice reduces the risk of diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol problems, etc. Red rice is also useful in reducing blood pressure. It also helps to prevent inflammation and cancer.Red rice contains minerals like manganese and phosphorus, which help reduce body fat. Moreover, it has a lot of fiber, so it keeps the stomach full longer, so eating less. Fiber also helps in weight loss by keeping the digestive system good
