Because the problem of this children is not only nutritional, but also physical and behavioral. Therefore it is the responsibility of the parents to understand their state of mind and arrange nutrition. Parents may be unduly apprehensive about the lack of proper understanding, or may become overly strict with their children. But neither is desirable.

In terms of nutrition the children with special needs are not able to grow physically and mentally as much as they should. It can be congenital or caused by any disease after birth. National Nutrition Month is being celebrated across the country in September. The issue of nutrition of pregnant woman has special importance in this program. REASON FOR NON-FOOD OBESITY:-

Besides of processed food increase in screen time there are some social reasons.

  •   In this case the added fear of parents works so even though they are forbidden in many cases, parents do not forbid them in case of eating. If the child wants an extra pocket of chips they give them that to keep him/her happy
  •        In many cases they do not take part in exercise or sports. Obesity can also be caused by genetics.
  •       In most of the cases they needs medicines. So weight gain can be achieved from side effects of these medicine.

EFFECTS OF OBESITY FOR THESE TYPE OF CHILDREN:-

·       When such children or adolescents gain weight, it becomes difficult for them to walk or to do any other activity.

·       Caregivers also find it difficult to make them bath

  • ·       A glass of apple juice in mornings is beneficial for the children. This juice should be made in home and not brought from outside.

  • ·       Ladies finger is beneficial for nervous system ad brain cell. So
you can keep boiled ladies finger in every day diet or one day in a week.

  • ·       Coconut water is also helpful for this type of student.

  • ·       It is very important to have green grains in any balanced diet. Spinach, red spinach must be included in the diet of special children.

MICRONUTRIENTS:-

According to many dietitians the demand for micronutrients is very high in the diet of children with special needs. So you need to pay attention to it.

·       Vitamins and minerals – In order to maintain a proper balance in diet they need vitamin B to keep the brain and mood right, vitamin A and to nourish the skin, Vitamin D for bone formation, calcium, phosphorus, iodine and iron.

·       These children are reluctant to drink enough water as per normal diet. Dehydration can lead to metal disorders and adverse effects on memory. So you have to keep an eye on drinking water as needed during the day.

·       Cereals, fiber, grains and fruits keep constipation away. Increases digestion.

·       However, it’s not that one rule will be applied to all special children. There may be physiological problems with chewing. Again out of reluctant sometime they can behave like that.

Parents guidelines:

  • ·       It is better not to be fed by showing the temptation of TV or mobile.

  • ·       If they have any difficulty eating solid foods you can give them yogurt, cereals or boiled apples.

  • ·       Keep an eye on the amount of junk foods, sweet foods. But occasionally treat them so as not to make them upset.

  • ·       Place any food on the table so that the child will feel comfortable while eating.

Thus proper nutrition is needed that can support this 'growth spurt' . Body composition: At the time of birth the child has 75% water and 12-15% fat. By the end of 1 year the water content decreases to 60% and fat increases to 24%. Muscles also start developing.  Changes in the body: (a) Rapid heart rate of about 120-140 beats / min.  (b) Hemoglobin level in well nourished infants is about 17-20 gm / 100 ml  (c) Almost completely developed digestive system and so they are able to digest protein, emulsified fats and simple carbohydrates like lactose.  (d) Salivary secretion and gastric acidity are low till about 3 months.   (e) Salivary amylase secreted after 6 months and so rice and other starchy foods should be given after this period.  (f) Kidneys reach th...
